A couple of months ago HauTe brought news of the “New African Fashion” book that was set for release in September of this year. Well, the time has come fashionable ladies and gentleman, with the release taking place yesterday, the 30th of September.
Helen Jennings, editor at major African fashion magazine ARISE, ventured on a journey to bring forth a brief history of African fashion, beauty and style. Jennings manages to follow the influence of African fashion on modern designers such as Burberry Prorsum, Louis Vuitton, and Calvin Klein alongside the best designers, photographers and models from across the continent and African diaspora.
Many of HauTe’s featured designers such as Duro Olowu, Jewel by Lisa, Black Coffee, score some detailed profiling within the book along with the current situation of African fashion and its noticeable growth on a world scale. Jennings also explores the range of designers moving beyond the common use of African aesthetic, embracing both “traditional and contemporary fabrics and garments.” For all of you ethically concious fashionistas, there’s also a little something extra for you. Jennings approaches the recent and expanding trend for environmentally concious clothing in the African fashion field and how this links with the merging of the East and West through design.
For those of you who live and breathe African fashion or who generally just have an interest in the exciting developments surrounding the African fashion world, this book is for you. Its great to see recognition being given where it is due with reputable spotlights being shone onto some of the best designers and their extensive contributions they’ve made (which often goes unnoticed), to the African fashion world. Don’t miss out on this great read, – go on, add it to your cart.
