JoBurg Fashion Week 2012 [Day 1]: AFI’s Fast Track Designers + Foschini Show.

Written by . Posted in Blog, Fashion Shows, Features.

From JoBurg Fashion Week Day 1 we saw a range of designers including the Foschini Show (four students chosen out of 12 fashion postgraduates – whose work was viewed at the Hyde Park Corner Rooftop in Johannesburg yesterday).

All the designers including Wetive Lindokuhle Marcia, Kyra-Moon Halfpenny, Kim Gush and Shelley Botha, showcased their diverse assemblages, with the aforementioned design students going through to the final round of the programme.

The ready to wear collections displayed a variety off trends to take notice of, with an amalgamation of floral and polka-dots being whipped out by Tamryn Van Der Merwe – (a combination one would not immedietly think to pair together yet so obvious in terms of the femininity expressed through the theme). Plenty of drape displayed by Jessica-Ann Fell and Van Der Merwe, fifties flair, predominately high necklines and sinched belted waists.

Angie Masike, Kyra Moon and Hugo Flear  took it to the next levels of extravagence with their collections; unveiling trends of mis-match, plenty of print and pastel. Fabrics throughout the show were predominately delicate and at times quite lush. The colour palettes (apart from our extravagent three) exhibited very soft tones of beige, peach, neutral, pastel, mustard and greys. Kim Gush opted for an entire black assemblage with a very neo-gothic feel making its way through.

Wetive Nkosi and Kyra Moon took big risks with their eye-catching collections, refraining from using the ‘less is more approach’, and utilizing every colour in the spectrum  for their crazy collage-like collections.

We absolutely loved Flear’s use of pastel and print with his sharp silhouettes, oozing a very Mary Kantranzou vibe. Van Der Merwe also struck a chord with her combination of polka and Floral, a soft assemblage with something that would appeal to everyone. And K. Lawrence Tsotetsi also managed to capture our hearts with his array of baroque-esque evening dresses in the smooth shade of wine. Tsotetsi was very creative with this assemblage in how he chose to incorporate a variety of opposing fabrics and elaborate layering.
