In South Africa, there’s a new voice entirely for menswear, reports Innocent Ndlovu.
Following London Collections: Men in the UK, Pitti Uomo in Florence, men’s fashion week in Milan and Paris and the reported New York Men’s Fashion Week in NYC, comes SA Menswear Week, a four day fashion event dedicated to menswear.
The first of its kind event in South Africa is set to launch this season in Cape Town at the Cape Town City Hall and will run from the 4th to the 7th of February 2015. 26 designers including Rich Mnisi of Oath, Craig Port, Palse Homme, C-Sqaured and Ruald Rheeder are set to showcase their Autumn/Winter 15 collections. The annual even will hold twice a year, in February and June. Fashion Director Chu Suwannapha will also make his debut at the event with the launch of his label Chulaap to the South African market.
“With the long established Fashion Weeks dedicating the majority of their schedule to women’s wear, and the global slowdown financially, it’s been shown that men are increasingly spending more on fashion, beauty and grooming products. In fact, within fashion, menswear is the leading growth area for many brands and labels in terms of sales.
International menswear weeks have shown to be incredibly successful, and SA Menswear Week hopes to provide the platform for growth locally as well as developing the Menswear designers and brands within South Africa”.
