Brief Biography:
After completing her studies, Amanda worked at a boutique before opening her own business. A year later she was approached by Instinct Surfwear International to run their design studio and after eight years, she launched her own label. In addition to being part owner of The Space stores, she designs for Big Blue under the Cubaverra label.
Summer 2009/10
This collection has come out of Amanda’s current situation of “floating above two continents” feeling displaced and convoluted, searching for some form of grounding. Her base inspiration comes from her native KwaZulu-Natal and the different ways in which people wrap fabric around their bodies.
The departure point was an image from 1975 of a young married woman from Msinga who draped fabric around her shoulders in the most beautiful way and continued through references of men and woman attending important occasions over the years such as rites of passage ceremonies, weddings, or dancing competitions, where they dress up and wear extraordinary beaded jewellery. It is the fabric wrapping and draping that forms part of their ensembles that particularly informed this collection.
“Overall there is a sense of surrealism that alludes to the etherealness of life but then embraces reality and includes elements from the earth such as seed beads and succulents. The shapes are a mixture of body fitting garments and folded details reflecting our need to belong despite our inclination to complicate matters,” she explains.

[...] First of all, I didn’t know that this veteran of fashion has a men’s range! Her kaftan long black shirts and apron accessories with knit doilies elicited the domestication of men as more women go out to get the bacon (also in line with trend forecasts that men, at least in fashion are set to become more feminine). I loved her knit doilie wraps, some worn as shawls and trail accessories on the garments as well as the flower shaped rings which bloomed from the fingers of the models. According to my style teacher and spokesperson of Sanlam SA Fashion Week, the designer draws influences from voodoo culture and black, shown in the slanted shaped detailing of her pockets and the use of the colour black. Other than that I wasn’t surprised or wowed. It seems this Ms Cherry played things safe but at least she seems to have gotten over shweshwe!(we hope). Hi, I purchased a dress from the Space in Woodlands Pretoria. I was very disappointed by the symmetry of the dress; one strap fits fine while the other continually falls off the shoulder and i have to pin it to the bra to keep it place. Even when i do this, the dress balloons at the back. Quite unfortunately, i purchased this dress and kept it for weeks before wearing it, waiting for that special occasion! I also in the meantime destroyed the purchase slip and could not return the dress to the store. Is there a possibility of redress?
