Joel Janse van Vuuren

Joel Janse van Vuuren was born into a creative family in Durban in 1984. As a child he enjoyed expressing himself in various artistic forms. During his teenage years at Kloof High School he received distinctions in art and technical drawing. Joel’s high school art focused primarily on three dimensional design and drawing.

After finishing matric, he travelled to Rome, Paris, Monaco and lived in London for almost two years, working at a high-end fashion store where his design flair developed into a love of fashion.

In 2005 Joel returned to Durban where he enrolled at the fashion school, Linea Academy. His talent in this field was soon recognised when he was selected as one of the top 20 finalists in the Vodacom Durban July and the Canon Gold Cup.

These achievements and recognition for his flair and feel for design continued throughout his years as a student. Joel’s designs were featured in a student fashion show at Durban Fashion Week in 2006. These designs were also featured in magazines Pursuit and Salt Water Girl. At the end of 2006 he was encouraged to continue his studies in fashion at the Durban University of Technology, where he completed his Diploma in Fashion and Textiles in 2008, and was awarded the Emma Smith Scholarship. This was followed by a Bachelors Degree of Technology in Fashion and Textiles, which he completed in 2010.

In 2007 Joel was the winner of the handbag category at the Pavilion Flower Show and later that year he was one of the top six student designers in the Foschini Design Awards competition, which was featured in You magazine.

In 2008 Joel did a 3-week internship with Marianne Fassler, one of South Africa’s most prominent local designers. During 2009, whilst studying for his degree, he freelanced, making matric dance and wedding dresses. In addition, he was also a part-time lecturer in Computer Fashion Design at the university. In the same year Joel was one of the top 10 finalists in the Sactwu Condom Fashion Design Competition and was featured in Salt Water Girl and Cleo. In 2010 he completed the 3-month Professional Practice Course, a practical art course, run by the KZNSA Gallery.

In mid-2010 Joel worked with Marianne Fassler again, assisting New York-based milliner Albertus Swanepoel, whom Marianne brought in as creative director for her collection for Africa Fashion Week.
Joel is currently based in Johannesburg where he is developing his own brand. His designs reflect his exploration of beauty, fashion and 21st century.
