Modahnik is a woman’s contemporary label that creates beautiful dresses using bold colors, vibrant African inspired prints and western design sensibilities. From New York to Johannesburg and back, the sophisticated individual style of the confident woman is reflected in the edgy and feminine details in a Modahnik piece. The line is produced in Africa using sustainable fair trade practices that adhere to the highest ethical and socially conscious principles.
Kahindo Mateene, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo founded Modahnik (an anagram of her first name and last initial) in 2009 during Fashion Focus Chicago. She is a 2011 Designer In Residence in the Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy’s on State Street. Kahindo has lived and traveled in several different countries on the continent of Africa, as well as in Europe and North America. These multiple cultural experiences influence her design aesthetic along with seeing her mother in beautiful colorful African print dresses during the 70s and 80s.
Kahindo holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago and a BA in International Business & Economics, from Blackburn College
