U.Mi-1 is a brand for people who are passionate about clothes, who judge luxury from the finishing inside to the detailing on the outside. For Creative Director, Gozi, U.Mi-1 represents unity and dialogue through fashion. These two themes are evident from the juxtaposition of different fabrics, detailing and style lines. The aesthetic she creates marries sophisticated tailoring/detailing with casual styles and fabrics.
Gozi studied Engineering and Menswear Tailoring at Imperial College London and the Central School of Fashion respectively and developed an approach to fashion which is best described as Fashion Engineering. Gozi worked for 2 years at the Anthony Reynolds gallery where she was exposed to great modern artists such as Turner Prize winners Mark Wallinger, Keith Tyson and Steve McQueen, so she draws inspiration from contemporary art forms. The strong lines in the collections are particularly inspired by architecture and cubism.
U.Mi-1 was established in Japan in 2008. The concept was to create a fashion as commercial art brand. A Japanese artist or architect was invited every season to collaborate on part of the collection, incorporating elements of their work into the design, for example transforming a collage into print and creating detailing from sculpture, endearing dialogue and an art following. Soon U.Mi-1 tailored jersey suits, unconventional denims embellished with leather and knits became popular among Japanese actors and pop stars. Project collaborations with Puma, Fiji Daimaru store, and PlusMinusZero followed.
U.Mi-1 has been noted as a brand to watch by fashion journalists at Japan Times and Marie Claire Italy and recently, Pitti Director, Antonio Cristaudo . Gozi has been recognised as an enormous talent. She has chaired a panel of fashion designers at the Harvard Business School Africa Conference and was a founding member of the Fashion Business Club in London that provides a forum which fashion entrepreneurs engage with, inspire and support one another.
U.Mi-1 shows at Rendez-Vous, Paris and Pitti Uomo, Italy annually.
